Indian Express – PETA rescues 11 dogs from SPCA, suspects mismanagement of funds

The unit has 11 staff with average salary of Rs 3,000-Rs 4,000 with the doctors getting paid Rs 5,000 per month. It thus goes without saying that the total expenditure on the salaries is in the range of Rs 40,000-50,000 per month. Additional expenses include, the running cost of the shelter, food, anti-rabies vaccination, medicines and so on.
While the trustees and the staff members say that insufficient funds is the reason behind not being able to maintain the place, SPCA is funded by The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and according to Raj Shekhar, secretary, AWBI, “There are two kinds of donations that we give to SPCA Pune — one for Animal Birth Control Programme (ABC) and the second one for the shelter cost. We had funded them with Rs 1,85,000 in the year 2007 for ABC and 10,000 in 2008 for shelter cost.” Boman Amaria, trustee, SPCA further added, “We are given a no-interest loan of over one-two lakh every year by Jeevdaya Foundation as well. Further, over 60 members pay a yearly donation of Rs 1,000 per head to the organisation.”
